1995 Long Island Reds Tasting: 12 Wines at 12 Years of Age
Last nights tasting of 1995 Long Island reds was definitely a success. After a couple winemaker cancellations (damn harvest season!) we ended up with six on our panel and we all had a great time seeing how these 12 wines at 12-years old have stood up over time (surprisingly well).
It’s probably going to take me a little while to write it up. I was taking my own notes and also writing down things the other tasters were saying (I was the only journalist in the room after all).
A big thanks goes out to Jared and Tracy from Grand Cru Classes for hosting, to Neil for taking the train out from Brooklyn, to Chris for cutting out of the Roanoke tasting room a little early and to Joe for finding someone to cover for him at his wine bar in Greenport. I think it was a great group and there were some great discussions.
It was surprising to me (and I think the rest of the group) just how lively most of the wines tasted. But, you’ll have to wait for detailed notes.
Thanks to one and all for a wonderful event! What a deliciously educational and insightful experience; wonderful to be in such excellent and experienced company, and a genuine pleasure to see how well these wines are still showing! I was honored to be asked to participate, and am grateful to have attended.

Yes - what Chris said. AWESOME. And I drank some of my leftovers today - still lively and interesting. Thanks so much for hosting and for inviting me.
