Baby Blogging: New Steelers Hat

Time for another Jackson picture update. A few weeks ago my parents sent our little guy a little pre-Xmas package. Inside were a couple new Steelers winter hats, including this one, some shirts and one of his new favorite stuffed animals, a manatee that we’ve nicknamed Manny. Creative right? I think this is Nena’s current favorite picture of Jackson. You can see his one tooth along the bottom. But, very soon, we’ll be welcoming another tooth next to that one, and one directly above it. He’s growing up fast people. He’ll be a year old in a little over a…

The 12 LI Wines of Christmas: #6 Grapes of Roth 2001 Merlot

This post is a part of my 12 Long Island Wines for Christmas series that will run from now until Christmas 2007. See the entire series here. Roman Roth isn’t a name that long-time readers of LENNDEVOURS are unfamiliar with. His primary gig is as winemaker at Wolffer Estate, but he also serves (or has served) as winemaker or consultant for wineries like Roanoke Vineyards, Shinn Estate Vineyards, Vineyard 48, Martha Clara Vineyards and Scarola Vineyards. His Grapes of Roth 2001 Merlot ($50) was the first release from his own label. He has recently released the 2002 vintage, but I…

More on the 2007 Vintage

We had a bit of a discussion here on LENNDEVOURS a couple weeks ago about the 2007 vintage and a column written by Howard Goldberg of the New York Times. At times it got personal, which isn’t good, but discussions are still useful. Well, it looks like the Wine Spectator agrees with grape growers that Long Island had a stellar growing season. Mitch Franks sent me this think earlier today and it sure speaks well of the 2007 vintage in New York State and on Long Island in particular. As you can see, Long Island was one of only two…

Last-Minute Gift Idea: The New York Cork Club

Looking for a great last-minute Christmas gift? How about the New York Cork Club? I don’t mention the club very often here on LENNDEVOURS (I don’t want to clutter this blog up with sales pitches) but it’s something that I always enjoy picking the wines for. Basically, members receive two bottles of New York wines every month, delivered to their door. These aren’t wines that are in any way affiliated with the club, Greene Grape Wine (my partner in this venture) or me. These aren’t end-of-vintage wines that wineries are trying to unload. They aren’t mediocre bottles that no one…

The 12 LI Wines of Christmas: #5 Lenz 2001 Cuvee

This post is a part of my 12 Long Island Wines for Christmas series that will run from now until Christmas 2007. See the entire series here. I can’t have a mixed case of Long Island wine for Christmas without including some bubbly can I? I knew that I had to include some sparkle to the 12 Long Island Wines of Christmas, but I wasn’t sure which to include. You rarely hear about Long Island’s sparklers, but there are several terrific ones, many of them made by Eric Fry. At first I was going to choose his Lenz 1994 RD…
