What We Drank (February 20, 2014 Edition)

Editor’s Note: We’ve taken a bit of a break from WWD of late, but the team has requested that we bring it back — so we are. Contributing Editor Todd Trzaskos will be running this feature going forward. Thanks, Todd! Michael Gorton Jr.: Rocky Point Artisan Brewers CROM  (Double IPA) Lenn and I decided we needed a beer night.   We were going to hit up a local joint that has been doing well after it had some tough reviews when it first opened.  But alas, they were closed.  So we settled, if you wanna say, on another craft beer joint…

Happy Holiday Season from the New York Cork Report

It’s Christmas Eve here at NYCR Worldwide Headquarters and it has just started snowing — two days after nearly reaching 70 degrees. Long Island weather is nothing if not interesting. Our grape growers know that well. Before my wife and I spend the next couple of hours filling in for the North Pole’s most famous resident, I just wanted to offer each of you a happy, fun and safe holiday season filled with great friends, family and of course delicious local libations. I’ve given the team the rest of the year off and plan to mostly take the next week…

What We Drank (December 17, 2013 Edition)

Here is a weekly sampling of some of the interesting — good or bad — libations that the New York Cork Report team has encountered over the past week. Lenn Thompson, Executive Editor: La Trou Du Diable La Saison du Tracteur As you may glean from some of the contributions below, a few NYCR folks were together (with some other folks) on Sunday for some food and libations. When a good friend from Quebec offered to bring some local saisons for the gathering, we ran with the theme tasting more than a dozen versions. Some were super-citrusy. Others were vinous…

What We Drank (December 10, 2013 Edition)

Here’s a sampling of what our contributors have been drinking… Lenn Thompson,  Executive Editor: Rocky Point Artisan Brewers Harvest Pilsner Our daughter’s birthday December 5. Our son’s is January 31. Sandwich the holidays in between the two and all of the school and social chaos that ensues — and you get non-stop activity from Thanksgiving until the Super Bowl. It’s important to my wife and I that we give each event its due — no lumping either birthday into the holidays in any way. Part of our strategy is to make sure we create and maintain traditions along the way. This…

What We Drank (December 3, 2013 Edition)

Here is a sampling of what our editors and contributors have been drinking… Bryan Calandrelli, Niagara Editor: Ravine Vineyard 2010 Reserve Cabernet Franc Picone Vineyard With overwhelming reviews from across the border and a few labels of “best cabernet franc” at a few wine competitions, I bit the bullet and threw down $50 for this single vineyard wine. Sourced from Chef Mark Picone’s vineyard in the Vinemount Ridge Appellation of Ontario (an area at the top of the escarpment where cooler temps and higher acidity usually prevails) this wine combines a warm vintage, major league vineyard management and the very capable…

What Are YOU Drinking With Thanksgiving Dinner?

Last week, the NYCR team shared some of what they will be drinking tomorrow with Thanksgiving dinner. It was a diverse list to be sure. Now it’s your turn. We want to know what are YOU plan to uncork with your meal tomorrow. Tell us about one bottle. Tell us about all of them. The NYCR team is on vacation until Monday — it’s the least I can do, right? — so have a great Thanksgiving!

What We Drank (November 26, 2013)

I thought about letting Michael Gorton have this WWD all to himself — you may be able to guess why from the picture and certainly will be able to below — but ultimately decided to just give him a lot more words than WWD is supposed to be. Again, you’ll see why in a moment. As always, this is a sampling of what our editors and contributors are drinking: Lenn Thompson, Executive Editor: Blue Bee Charred Ordinary Cider I recently had the opportunity to taste a handful of Virginia-made ciders. All were well made and tasty, but one stood out…

What We Drank (November 12, 2013)

Here is a sampling of what libations passed the lips of our editors and contributors last week: Evan Dawson, Managing Editor: Mocali 2009 Rosso di Montalcino I suspect that, 20 years ago, wine writing was more focused on sifting through the flawed wines to find the good wines. Today, there aren’t many flawed wines on the market. Most are sound, safe, if banal. So when friends or family ask, “What wine should I drink with X?”, it’s hard to answer the question. They’re safe, generally speaking, in most categories. And yet, oddly, I find Rosso di Montalcino to be the…

What We Drank (November 5, 2013)

It’s rare that What We Drank — our weekly peek into what our editors and contributors are drinking — doesn’t include at least one New York wine, but it happened this week. looking at the diverse lineup though, it’s hard to argue with what found its way into the team’s glasses this week. Except maybe the box wine. I kid. Sorta. Lenn Thompson, Executive Editor: Louis Roederer “Brut Premier” Champagne I could have picked from a wide array of delicious drinks that crossed my lips last week — including Michael’s contribution below, which really was a stunner. My lovely wife, Nena,…

What We Drank (10/29/13)

After a many-week hiatus, the team has decided to renew our commitment to our weekly What We Drank feature, where we offer a peek into some of the beer, wine and spirits we’re enjoying — local or not. Lenn Thompson, Executive Editor: Sheldrake Point 2009 BLK 3 Pinot Noir Sometimes, all you need to know about a wine is how quickly it is emptied at dinner with some friends. As often as possible, my wife and I have been doing a traditional Sunday dinner where the four of us — my wife and our two kids — eat together. Anna…
