Duck Walk Vineyards 2010 Pinot Meunier

There must have been at least some sour rot in the fruit that winemaker Edward Lovaas had to work with for Duck Walk Vineyards 2010 Pinot Meunier ($23). You can smell the vinegar-y notes right up front on the nose. Behind the rot/VA are some nice red berry aromas — red cherry and raspberry — but the acetic acid is hard to get past. That off-putting character is less evident on the medium-light bodied palate, where bright red raspberry flavors mingle with note of dried cherry, prune and slightly raw oak flavors. The tannins are are grippy and the acidity plenty…

5 Questions with… Edward Lovaas, Head Winemaker, Pindar Vineyards and Duck Walk Vineyards

Edward Lovaas, head winemaker at Pindar Vineyards and Duck Walk Vineyards, grew up in Crescent City, CA but moved to Ukiah, CA —  the heart of Mendocino wine country — when he was a sophomore in high school. After high school he spent four years in the United States Marine Corps before returning Ukiah where he got into the wine business almost by accident. Duck Walk Vineyards 2010 “Aphrodite” Late Harvest Gewurztraminer

Duck Walk Vineyards 2010 “Aphrodite” Late Harvest Gewurztraminer ($25) bursts with intense lychee and peach aromas, backed by brown baking spices and surprisingly understated floral notes. Well balanced, it is sweet, but far from cloying, and screams gewurztraminer with its combination of peach, pineapple, lychee, candied ginger and rose petal flavors. The finish is clean and bright, even if it doesn’t linger very long. Producer: Duck Walk Vineyards AVA: North Fork of Long Island ABV: 11% Price: $25   (3 out of 5, Very good/Recommended)

Bernard Cannac Out as Winemaker at Duck Walk Vineyards

The winemaking landscape on Long Island is changing quite a bit in recent weeks. The latest bit of news, again involving Bernard Cannac, is that he has been laid off as the winemaker at Duck Walk Vineyards. Emails to Duck Walk Vineyards have not been returned. When/if they are, hopefully we’ll learn who the new winemaker will be. My guess is that Jason Damianos, winemaker at sister winery Pindar and CEO of the parent company will take the reins. No word on what Cannac’s plans are either.
