New York Wine News and Notes (12/8/08)

A few New York wine news items from the last several days: Shinn Estate Vineyards 2005 Estate Merlot was mentioned over on Eric Asimov's wine blog, The Pour, last week. Eric has long been a proponent for Long Island merlot and I think this wine, year in and year out, is one of his favorites. (Read my review) Shinn Estate also received an 89-point score from the Wine Spectator for their 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that I've not tasted. Juan Eduardo Micieli-Martinez, winemaker at Martha Clara Vineyards, also let me know that Premium Wine Group, the custom-crush facility where…

A Taste of the Old(er) Finger Lakes

Morgen McLaughlin and Leign Triner. Photo Courtsey of Morgen McClaughlin Editor's Note: The following is a guest post by Shannon Brock, wine coordinator at the New York Wine & Culinary Center. Those in the know are well aware that Finger Lakes wines, particularly rieslings, are capable of ageing ten years or more. A couple weeks ago, a group of Finger Lakes wine community members gathered at Red Newt Cellars prove it. Their mission: to select about 40 library wines to send to James Molesworth of Wine Spectator. The hope is that if Molesworth finds the wines to be holding up…

Finger Lakes Wine: Will Old Wines Mean New Respect?

By Melissa Dobson, Finger Lakes News Correspondent In an effort to continue to establish the Finger Lakes wine region as a producer of world-class wine, a first-time older vintage tasting of almost 70 wines produced from 1988-2003 will be held tomorrow, Friday, November 14, 2008 at Red Newt Cellars and Bistro on Seneca Lake. This tasting of a diverse collection of wines from past vintages is an important step for the wineries of the Finger as they travel the road toward carving out a place amongst the top wine regions of the world. Prior to this effort, there was no…

Wine Chick Wednesday: I’m in a New York State of Disconnect

We New Yorkers are a weird bunch. To start, we can’t even agree on what being a New Yorker means. A former NYC resident myself, I always found it beyond comical that NY1 would devote an entire 60 seconds to the “World Beyond New York” – be it Long Island, Louisiana or Lithuania, it was all the same upon exit from the five boroughs. Is that, then, the true New York? Not likely. Despite the heavy tax-base and votership in that small speck of real estate, the rest of the state ends up feeling neglected and overlooked. For example, when…

Mail Order Grapes in the Finger Lakes

By Finger Lakes Correspondent Jason Feulner This past spring, the comments of some LENNDEVOURS readers concerning the origin of grapes for Dr. Frank’s second label, Salmon Run, elicited a response from Fred Frank, president of the winery. His explanation as to the origin of these grapes for the value-priced Salmon Run line reveals the market pressures that are brought to bear on Finger Lakes wineries. Bad winters can kill some species of vines, creating legitimate regional shortages. Dr. Frank’s and other quality wineries did face some supply problems over the last several vintages. Luckily, the relative mildness of recent winters…

Party On at Bully Hill

By Finger Lakes Correspondent Jason Feulner All the talk recently about the party-like atmosphere at some wineries brings to mind Bully Hill Vineyards, a winery nestled on the hills overlooking the beauty that is Keuka Lake. This winery is a party destination that mixes a proud history, great bottle art, ample tastings and thong underwear. The story starts with the Taylor Wine Company. The Taylor family was one of the original wine producing families of the Finger Lakes. The Taylor Wine Company grew from a small 19th-Century family operation into a 20th-Century wine bohemeth. After being acquired by the Coca-Cola…

Finger Lakes Wine Country–It’s Getting Crowded in Here!

By Finger Lakes Correspondent Jason Feulner The other day I posted an entry here about three new wineries in the Finger Lakes. After a 10-day Maine summer adventure during which I barely had access to the Internet, I come home to discover, from the ever-informative Finger Lakes Weekend Wino, that there are two more new wineries!  The Weekend Wino reviews these new efforts here. Like the other three new wineries, both Imagine Moore winery and Keuka Lake Winery seem to be focusing their winemaking toward vinifera, which is a great sign. The owners have really interesting backgrounds, which adds to…

New Wines for New Times

By Finger Lakes Correspondent Jason Feulner In the last few years the Finger Lakes region has attracted a plethora of media attention for its improving wine. This attention hasn’t just attracted tasters and consumers. It’s attracted entrepreneurs as well. The abundance of cheap agricultural land along the beautiful shores of the lakes offer quite an opportunity for those who want to break into the wine business. Despite the fact that the region already boasts over 90 wineries, there is room, at least physically, for many more. Hence, new wineries have popped up all over the place. In this article, Alex…

Visiting the Finger Lakes: Part 2

By Finger Lakes Correspondent Jason Feulner In the first part of this series, I wrote about when to go to the Finger Lakes, where to stay for maximum wine-tasting opportunity, and how to go about selecting wineries to visit.  This time around, I’d like to talk about the general qualities of the wine and other attractions. If any readers have any questions–any questions at all–feel free to leave a comment. I am happy to help no matter the query! What to Expect in the WineThe Finger Lakes region has a reputation for white wine, which is well-deserved. Riesling is good…
