WTN: Treleaven 2006 Gewurztraminer (Finger Lakes)

I had high hopes when I opened this wine from King Ferry Winery/Treleaven . I’ve thoroughly enjoyed their rieslings in the past and thought that their rose (made with cab franc) was pretty nice too. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t my favorite. Treleaven’s 2006 Gewurztraminer ($14.50) is an extremely pale straw yellow. The nose is tight and doesn’t offer much in the way of aromas — some light floral notes and just a little spice. Medium-light bodied, it is somewhat neutral tasting with just a little bit of the classic Gewürztraminer character that I love (rose petals, lychee, ginger spice). The…

WTN: Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars 2006 Gewurztraminer (Finger Lakes)

Today we’re focusing on Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars’ 2006 Gewurztraminer, a fresh, spicy white from one of the regions best-respected producers. Sometimes gewuztraminer can be over-the-top in its floral quality–to the point that it tastes more like perfume than wine. Not so with this terrific bottle.…

WTN: Corey Creek Vineyards 2006 Gewurztraminer (North Fork of Long Island)

I happen to love gewurztraminer, but only a handful of local wineries bother with this under-appreciated grape Some make it in the off-dry style that I think plagues many U.S. bottlings, but a couple use Alsace as their model, crafting dry, distinctive wines. Corey Creek Vineyards 2006 Gewürztraminer ($30) is similar to the stellar 2005, and while maybe a little less intensely flavored, it’s no less enchanting or delicious This is an extremely aromatic white with wild flowers, peach and lychee mingling in a nose that is typical for the varietal but somehow fresher and more lively. The flavors in…
