Grand Cru Classes to Present at City Winery on February 26

On February 26 at 6:00 p.m., my good friends Jared and Tracy from Grand Cru Classes, a wine education center on the North Fork, will be hosting a special seminar titled "Long Island Wines: From Potato Farms to Parker Points" at the newly launched City Winery in Manhattan. They'll be discussing the history and growth of the Long Island wine industry, highlighting the recent successes and recognition the region has received. The 90-minute program will include a guided wine tasting, featuring the following six wines, all of which have been graciously donated by the respective wineries.  TBD, Sparkling Brut, NV…

1995 Long Island Reds Tasting: 12 Wines at 12 Years of Age

Last nights tasting of 1995 Long Island reds was definitely a success. After a couple winemaker cancellations (damn harvest season!) we ended up with six on our panel and we all had a great time seeing how these 12 wines at 12-years old have stood up over time (surprisingly well). It’s probably going to take me a little while to write it up. I was taking my own notes and also writing down things the other tasters were saying (I was the only journalist in the room after all). A big thanks goes out to Jared and Tracy from Grand…

In Case You Missed It: Grand Cru Classes Has Planted Their Vineyard

Memorial Day weekend was a big weekend for the folks at Grand Cru Classes, the only wine education organization in Long Island wine country.  You see, not only have the renovated their barn and converted it into a classroom, but last weekend they finished planting their educational vineyard. Grand Cru Classes to host Open House April 23

I’ve written about Grand Cru Classes before and its founders, Tracy and Jared are knowledgeable, passionate wine lovers who are doing something I believe in–bringing top-notch wine education to the North Fork of Long Island. They started with their classes last summer, teaching them at various host wineries as they renovated the old Catapano Dairy Farm to convert it into a wine education center. Well, on April 23 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. they are happy to host a grand opening open house. They’ll be serving wine and cheese and offering tours of their new facilities. For those of you…

Lenz Merlot Classic, Roanoke 2004 Preview BBQ and Upcoming Events

Fall is one of the most exciting — and hectic — times on the East End of Long Island. The grapes have undergone veraison — the green grapes have changed color and started to ripen — and harvest season has begun (for sparkling wine) and will continue well into November. The ever-popular pumpkins and mums are also coming in, so the crowds will be flooding their favorite farm stands and nurseries. They bring a lot of energy to the region — but they make it harder for me to get to the wineries because of the traffic. As with any…
