Local With Local with Deb Whiting, Red New Bistro: Pear-Fennel Flatbread with Lamoreaux Landing 2008 Red Oak Riesling

By Chef Deb Whiting, Red Newt Bistro My assignment this time around for "Local with Local" was a pairing with Lamoreaux Landing 2008 Red Oak Riesling. This is a beautiful Finger Lakes dry riesling that has overtones of pear and lemon pith. Nice structure, mineral and lean, but Lenn will tell you more about that in an upcoming review. On with the food pairing. As I was tasting this I thought it would be lovely with an appetizer utilizing local pears — a great way to start off a great meal! So how about a flatbread with roasted fennel, sauteed…

TasteNY: Finger Lakes Riesling Results

The first TasteNY tasting at Peconic Bay Winery By Lenn Thompson, Long Island Editor and Editor-in-Chief As previously mentioned, I co-hosted a blind tasting of 24 rieslings (including 12 from the Finger Lakes) at Peconic Bay Winery last week as a part of the TasteNY project. It was a lot of fun and very interesting to taste these wines with 8 winemakers and some other members of the Long Island wine community. The 24 wines were broken into three flights of eight wines each and were scored using the American Wine Society 20-point system and sheets.  Flight #1: Phillips Eckstein…

Q&A: Josh Wig, General Manager, Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars

Today's Q&A subject (standing), harvesting cabernet franc This is a Q&A that I've been looking forward to doing for several months now. Why? Well, it's kind of a funny story really. I've been writing about Finger Lakes wines for a few years now, but until maybe a year or so ago, I didn't really know very many of the players. A few winemakers here. A few winery owners there. Maybe some marketing folks. But one day, I was looking on Lamoreaux Landing's website for some information about them and I noticed "Josh Wig – General Manager" and thought to myself…

Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars 2007 T23 Cabernet Franc

By Lenn Thompson, Editor and Publisher Cabernet franc is a wine that comes in many styles across New York state. One one end of the spectrum, you have winemakers who eschew oak completely. On the other end, you have the winemakers who treat cabernet franc like it's cabernet sauvignon blanc, extending maceration and bludgeoning it with new oak. I guess what I'm saying is that there isn't a clearly defined New York style cabernet franc yet. Nor is there a distinct style for Long Island, the Finger Lakes, etc. either. This unoaked rendition, Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars' 2007 T23 Cabernet…

New York Cork Club: August Selections

As you know, I’m a little behind on several LENNDEVOURS-related projects (I have about half of the WBW #36 roundup done). But I wanted to quickly post about the wines I picked for the August shipment of the New York Cork Club, which is like a mini-trip to Alsace without leaving your house. Because I love Finger Lakes riesling so much, I find it difficult to not pick one every month. I could do so easily…there are that many great ones available. Instead, I’ve been looking for a New York-born Gewürztraminer that  you’ll love. I’ve tasted a lot of them,…

WTN: Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars 2006 Gewurztraminer (Finger Lakes)

Riesling might rule the Finger Lakes, but don’t be fooled–it’s not the only game in town. What wines shine in central New York? When I think about it, I think about Alsace–riesling, gewurztraminer and pinot gris all do well. I’ve written about the riesling quite a bit and we’ll tackle pinot gris another day. Today we’re focusing on Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars’ 2006 Gewurztraminer, a fresh, spicy white from one of the regions best-respected producers. Sometimes gewuztraminer can be over-the-top in its floral quality–to the point that it tastes more like perfume than wine. Not so with this terrific bottle.…

WTN: Lamoreaux Landing 2006 Dry Riesling (Finger Lakes)

So I still haven’t decided what, if any, rating system I’m going to start using when I review wines here on LENNDEVOURS. That’s part of the reason that there haven’t been as many tasting notes as there usually is. The other reason is that sometimes I just plain don’t feel like sitting down and "tasting" wine. Sometimes you just want to drink wine, right? But, I sat down last night with three recent releases from Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars up in the Finger Lakes. One (a chardonnay) was corked and you’ll be reading about the Gewürztraminer plenty here in the…
