Lieb Cellars 2009 Blanc de Blancs

There are times when I want sparkling wine to be yeasty, funky and autolytic. Other times, I want bubbly that is pure, clean and driven by citrus and mineral flavors — and that is when I’d reach for Lieb Cellars 2009 Blanc de Blancs ($35). Fresh and bright, the nose offers aromas just-ripe pear, lemon zest, lemon meringue pie and citrus blossom with only the most subtle yeasty qualities. Dry and piercingly crisp and refreshing, the palate combines fruit flavors like pear, green apple and golden raspberry with a distinct marine minerality. Gentle mid-palate richness is balanced by frothy,…

Established in 1992 and 2000 respectively, these important North Fork wine companies are combining and recapitalizing to ensure continued growth. WBW #61: Lieb Family Cellars 2007 Bridge Lane Cabernet Franc

By Lenn Thompson, Long Island Editor and Editor-in-Chief Lieb Family Cellars, a small North Fork winery with a tasting room tucked into the front of the Premium Wine Group complex, was one of the wineries that first inspired me to start writing about wine more than five years ago. It was the first winery I had visited on Long Island where I enjoyed every wine in the lineup. In fact, Nena and I joined the wine club after that first visit. So, when I was trying to decide what winery to visit for Wine Blogging Wednesday #61: At the Source,…

LENNDEVOURS/canvas Magazine “Drink Local” Wine Event a Success

(All photographs courtesy of Alex M Wolff Photography) Saturday night’s LENNDEVOURS/canvas Magazine wine event went off without so much as a hiccup, let alone a hitch. We had more than 70 people show up (a great turnout), the food was delicious and the wines were equally so. I’d like to thank Melissa from Lieb Family Cellars, Janel from Macari Vineyards, and Joann and Janet from Raphael for bringing and pouring their wines. They were extremely well received as I heard when I "worked the room" chatting with those in attendance. Also, a hearty thank you to Chris and the crew…

March 1: LENNDEVOURS/canvas Magazine Wine Event

I’ve been toying around with the idea of hosting a Long Island wine event for some time. But now, through my affiliation with canvas Magazine, it’s becoming a reality. On Saturday, March 1 at 5 p.m., join me, three North Fork wineries, and Whole Foods Market at canvas’ Footprint Art Gallery in Huntington, NY for a local wine tasting with light food pairings. The three participating wineries are Raphael, Lieb Family Cellars and Macari Vineyards, and they’ll be pouring a variety of wines along side some food from Whole Foods. In addition to great wine and food, there will be…

WTN: Lieb Family Cellars 2005 Bridge Lane Chardonnay (North Fork of Long Island)

Lieb Family Cellars is a producer that has a special place in the hearts of the LENNDEVOURS team. It was our first "home" winery. Back before I was even writing about wine (professionally or not) or knew much about it, this was a winery Nena and I discovered together and we even joined the wine club. When we got married three and a half years ago, we toasted one another with Lieb’s sparkling pinot blanc. And, over the years, we’ve bought quite a bit of their second-label chardonnay, named Bridge Lane. We’e served it at parties, bought it for pinot-grigio…

New York Cork Club: August Selections

As you know, I’m a little behind on several LENNDEVOURS-related projects (I have about half of the WBW #36 roundup done). But I wanted to quickly post about the wines I picked for the August shipment of the New York Cork Club, which is like a mini-trip to Alsace without leaving your house. Because I love Finger Lakes riesling so much, I find it difficult to not pick one every month. I could do so easily…there are that many great ones available. Instead, I’ve been looking for a New York-born Gewürztraminer that  you’ll love. I’ve tasted a lot of them,…

LENNDEVOURS Q&A: Gary Madden, GM at Lieb Family Cellars

What (and where) was the first bottle of wine you remember drinking? I was in grad school working at an expensive downtown restaurant in Chicago (called Nick’s Fishmarket, originally from Honolulu), managing the service bar where all the wine was stocked, and the conductor of the Chicago Symphony came in with guests, ordered two each of spectacular wines and left half the wines for the staff — a Lafite Rothschild (1976 maybe?), a Chevalier Montrachet, and a German Bernkastel Docktor. I was only 22 and could never afford wines like that! What event/bottle/etc made you decide that you wanted to…

April: Lieb Family Cellars’ 3rd Annual Oysterfest

Throughout the month of April, Lieb Family Cellars will be toasting the arrival of spring with its third annual OysterFest. Every Sunday in April, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., tasting room visitors will be able to sample a variety of wines and oyster dishes prepared by local chefs. The winery will offer a special vertical tasting of three vintages of their signature wine pinot blanc (including their Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine, a LENNDEVOURS favorite). They will also be releasing their 2004 Cabernet Franc. April 15: Canal Cafe Presents Po’ Boy Oysters Chef’s Parker and Paul Hodges create their…
