Dedicated to Local or Taking Advantage of Locavores?

By Lenn Thompson, Editor-in-Chief Photo of Church & Main's dining room from Yelp.com A few weeks ago, I did something at a restaurant that I almost never do — at least not at a fine dining restaurant. I drank beer before and during my meal. On the surface, that's not that big a deal. I drink beer all the time. Heck, I was a beer geek long before I became obsessed with wine. Besides, sometimes beer is a better pairing that wine. Yes. It's true. So why was I drinking beer at Church & Main restaurant in Canajoharie, NY —…

Local with Local: 2 Regions. 2 Chefs.

By Lenn Thompson, Editor and Publisher My ongoing Local with Local project is expanding beyond Long Island this summer. Expanding to the Finger Lakes. Today, I'm happy to announce that Chef Deb Whiting, chef at Red Newt Bistro on Seneca Lake in New York's Finger Lakes region will be joining LwL vet Chef Doug Gulija of The Plaza Cafe in Southampton, NY. (Read more about Chef Doug) Deb also happens to be co-owner of Red Newt Wine Cellars with her husband Dave Whiting, who is the winemaker. A winemaker and chef owning a winery and restaurant. Sounds like a power…

How to Convince Consumers and Restaurants to Buy Local Wine

By Evan Dawson, Finger Lakes Correspondent So how DO you convince consumers and restaurants to buy local wine? I realize the first solution is to offer quality wine. Let's start with the premise that New York wine is of higher quality than many people probably assume. There's a new "Buy Local" campaign afoot in the Finger Lakes, and unlike many well-intentioned but ultimately misguided efforts, this one strikes me as simple and effective. Joanna Purdy created two posters for Fox Run Vineyards, and the posters will be made available to other wineries and organizations that would like to use them…

Local With Local: Seared Peconic Bay Scallops with Wolffer Estate 2003 Estate Selection Chardonnay

Our little Local With Local project kicks off 2008 with another recipe from chef Doug Gulija from The Plaza Cafe in Southampton. This time around, we’ve paired a popular East End delicacy, Peconic Bay scallops, with a deliciously balanced barrel fermented 2003 Estate Selection Chardonnay from Wolffer Estate. As always, a big thanks goes out to by chef Doug and Ellen Watson, the photographic talent behind the above picture. This is a terrific combo and I’m proud to say that this menu item is currently on the menu at the restaurant. Recipe behind the jump.

May’s Local with Local Pairing

The goal of my new "Local with Local" series is to not only show how well Long Island food goes with Long Island wine, but also to make it easier for people to try putting the two together at home. For our inaugural pairing, I’ve worked with Doug Gulija of Plaza Cafe to put together a delectable spring offering. I told him that I wanted to focus on sauvignon blanc–specifically the latest vintage from Channing Daughters Winery and this is what he came up with. He’s known for his masterful work with seafood, and this looks delicious (even to someone…

Why do YOU drink local?

Obviously I drink a lot of local wines, and I can only assume that a lot of you do as well, be them wines from Long Island, California, France, wherever you live. I’m working on a piece about why I drink local, but I’d love to hear why you drink local. What is it about the wines made near your house that draw you in and make you keep going back for more? Leave a comment and tell me!
