Long Island Wine Country Trip Report: At Channing Daughters and Paumanok, Experiments Yield Success

By Evan Dawson, Finger Lakes Editor Morgan and I took our first trip to Long Island wine country last weekend and I plan to share some observations and experiences in a series of upcoming posts. They are in no particular order of quality or chronology, and I should state emphatically that the winemakers and owners we met were excessively generous with their time and cellars.  Long Island wine country is, in no small measure, a must-visit for New York wine enthusiasts. It is wildly different when compared to the state's other appellations. The vineyards are flatter than a cookie sheet…

The Moment When a Finger Lakes Wine Lover Was Sold on Long Island

From left to right: Katie Feulner, Jason Feulner, Lenn Thompson, Nena Thompson, Evan Dawson, Morgan Dawson, Melissa Dobson, Rich Dobson By Evan Dawson, Finger Lakes Correspondent Everyone who loves wine has a memory that stands out with perfect clarity thanks to a single bottle of wine. We remember the meal, the lighting in the room, the conversations shared over the bottle. This is the power of wine. It is far more than a beverage. If we are fortunate, we have not one special wine memory, but many. I will never forget the moment I drank the first sip of Rosso del…

Paumanok Vineyards and Wollfer Estate Announce Mediterranean Cruise in Summer 2009

Most wineries put on a plethora of events every summer. You have your live music in the vineyard. You have the wine dinner at a local restaurant. Now, thanks to Wolffer Estate and Paumanok Vineyards, you have a 10-Night Mediterranean Cruise on Oceania Cruises’ Insignia with stops in Greece, Malta, Italy, France, Morocco and Spain. The cruise will take place June 24 – July 4, 2009 and cabin prices begin at $3,349 per person, which may seem a little steep, but it includes round-trip air to Europe and all of your meals on the boat, which means that by 2009…

Wine Chick Wendesday: The Return of a Native

Surely, you’ve heard the expression ‘You can take the girl out of Long Island, but you can’t take Long Island out of the girl’? Plead ignorance on that if you must, but it is a truism if ever there was one. Along with enhancing my innate predilection for strip malls, spandex and merging ‘ing’s with the next vowel, returning home to the Mother Land (or “Muthuh”, if you’re a local) allows me to romp among the fields of plenty. I’m actually un/fortunate enough to hail from the East End of Long Island. Fortunate because I remember being able to walk…

The 12 LI Wines of Christmas: #9 Paumanok Vineyards 2004 Assemblage

This post is a part of my 12 Long Island Wines for Christmas series that will run from now until Christmas 2007. See the entire series here. When I woke up this morning, I realized that I only had a few more days to announce the final four selections for my 12 Long Island Wines of Christmas series. Like every year, and in every way, it seems that the holiday has sneaked up on me. The #9 wine in this mixed case of Long Island wines is one that is tasting well now, but should be even better in years…

LENNDEVOURS Mentioned in Newsday

A reader tipped me off to the fact that LENNDEVOURS was mentioned is Newsday today. The topic of the short piece is Paumanok Vineyards’ being the first Long Island winery to employ screwcaps. I let you guys know about this back in August and I’m quoted in Mark Harrington’s piece. A comment that Bill of Loving Long Island left on my original post was also quoted. I didn’t know that buyers of wine futures can opt to have their wines bottled under cork or screwcap. That’s a pretty interesting thing. I’m curious to hear how many buyers choose the screwcaps.…

The Best Long Island Wines of 2006

As 2006 comes to an unseasonably warm close here on Long Island, I thought it a good time to list and highlight some of my favorite Long Island wines of 2006. I’m a lucky guy. I’m tasting and writing about Long Island wines as much as — and probably more than — anyone else. I consider myself even luckier because I’m doing so as the region really starts to reach maturity. Remember, this industry only started in 1973. Its still a baby by wine region standards Over the past few years, local winemakers have really started hitting their stride, crafting…

Holiday Wine Survival Tips

Ah yes, the holiday season. It overflows with extra food, extra family time and – if we’re lucky – lots of extra drink to get us through that extra family time. Of course it also brings the ubiquitous holiday party as well – thrown by your neighbor, your friends, your boss or, again, your family. This time of year, it seems like everyone I know asks me for suggestions on what wines they should take to all of those parties. Maybe your friends try to serve you koolaid-like white zinfandel or cheap, way-too-simple-for-the-holidays Aussie shiraz with a furry creature on…
