Finger Lakes Riesling on Wine Library TV

In case you missed it, I just wanted to point out that Gary V is tasting New York wines again, this time turning his tongue towards three rieslings from the Finger Lakes. And, as much as it pains me to admit it, he seems spot on with his impressions. I’ve not had the Silver Threat, but I have had both the Heron Hill and the Hermann Wiemer (which was part of the New York Cork Club’s first shipment). Much like our Jet-fan "friend" I think the Heron Hill is just okay…but that Wiemer, oh that Wiemer, delicious. Check out Wine…

WTN: Ste. Chapelle 2005 Winemaker’s Series Riesling (Idaho)

You read the post title right–this wine is from Idaho. In fact, I toyed with the idea of naming this post "Who Da Ho? I Da Ho." but thought better of it. It’s been a long time since I have made a tour stop in my 50 States. 50 Wineries. project, but I stumbled upon this wine at a small little wine shop in upstate New York. It was nestled in a display rack next to several Finger Lakes rieslings, and for $11 bucks, I thought "It’s worth a shot." And indeed it was. Of course, most people think of…

Meet Mickey Mouse. Drink New York Wines.

I just got an email telling me that Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort’s Blue Zoo restaurant will soon be pouring six, count em six, New York wines. So, now you can take your kids to meet Mickey and Minnie Mouse…and then enjoy some some delectable Finger Lakes and Long Island wines with dinner. The wines chosen by Blue Zoo’s team are: Atwater Estate Cabernet Franc Heron Hill Ingle Vineyard Riesling Heron Hill Semi-Dry Riesling Sheldrake Point Riesling (my review) Raphael La Fontana Wolffer Estate Selection Chardonnay I’ve had all of these wines with the exception of Atwater’s cab…

WTN: Sheldrake Point 2005 Dry Riesling

As a resident of the great state of New York resident, I have at least somewhat ready access to a plethora of great local Rieslings. German — particularly those from the Mosel — are my absolute favorites, but the Finger Lakes region is responsible for what I consider to be the best bottles this side of the Atlantic Ocean. Truth be told, vinifera grapes shouldn’t succeed in central New York. But, the narrow, deep Finger Lakes gather and hold enough heat in the summer to stretch the growing season into the fall and stave off early frosts. As anyone who…

The Thanksgiving Column

Every wine writer or blogger has to write a wine-pairing column for Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a must. It’s one of the un-written rules — along with the mandatory New Year’s Eve sparkling wine column, which you can expect to see in just a few weeks. Of course, no two Thanksgiving wine-pairing columns are alike. As it should be, everybody has his or her favorites for the holiday. Sparkling wine, chardonnay, riesling, pinot noir, Beaujolais, syrah, Rioja, sangiovese, zinfandel…the list goes on and on and on. There are as many suggestions as their are wine raconteurs. Me, I tend to like…

Appellation America: Riesling’s Rebirth

Dan Berger, Appellation America’s Editor-at-Large, wrote a great little piece last week about riesling’s rebirth in America. Riesling is, by far, my favorite white grape and he mentions some of my favorite Finger Lakes producers — Fox Run and Dr. Konstantin Frank. I thought the story had a little too much California in it — I’ve never had a Cali riesling I’ve liked — but Dan brought it back into focus with mentions of the Pacific Northwest, Michigan and, of course, New York. Check out the story and keep an eye out here for more information on Michigan riesling. They…

This Week On Appellation America (9/29/06)

I don’t often write much about my Appellation America gig here on LENNDEVOURS. But, for those of you that don’t know, I’m the regional correspondant for both the Long Island and Hudson Valley regions. What this means is that in addition to helping build appellation consciousness for the two regions, I’m responsble for tasting and recommending their wines as well. It’s hard work, but somebody has to do it, right? The cool thing is that editorial really drives the Appellation America site — a rarity in the wine media world to be sure. Starting today, I’ll highlight my Appellation America…

Top New York Wine From Hudson Valley Winery Made Right Here In Mattituck

By defeating 635 other wines from across New York State, Rivendell Winery’s 2003 Dry Riesling captured the Governor’s Cup at the 19th annual New York Wine and Food Classic this summer at the Inn at East Wind in Wading River. In doing so, it earned the title “New York’s Best Wine.” When I heard that, I knew I needed some time in New Paltz for a little R&R – Rivendell and Riesling. And, a couple weeks later, I got my chance. As my future wife and I drove down the New York State Thruway, heading back to the Island after…
