The Finger Lakes Come to Astoria, Queens — Winegasm Brunch

Sunday, in my fair neighborhood of Astoria, Queens—on a day more reminiscent of a sunny Spring afternoon in May—a wee gathering of Finger Lakes winemakers met at Winegasm, a local wine bar I’ve only hit up once in its 4-year tenure. After seeing their support for New York wines, however, and despite its rather unfortunate name, I’ll be headed back to support them. The space is charming and rustic, with a massive skylight flooding the wooden tables and a winelist that gives a few nods to our New York brethren. Popping bottles at the long, wooden communal table were principals…

Celebrating the Opening of Mirabelle Tavern With Eric Fry from Lenz Winery

When one of our favorite restaurants, Mirabelle, close a few months ago, Nena and I were really bummed. But, almost immediately, we heard that it was re-opening at the Three Village Inn in April. Well, Mirabell itself will be opening soon, but next week they are celebrating the opening of Mirabell Tavern. Chef Guy Reuge is teaming with Eric Fry, winemaker at Lenz Winery on the celebration, which promises to be a fun one. Both are at the top of their crafts on Long Island. And, assuming we can get our babysitter situation worked out, Nena and I will be…

October 24: Wine Dinner at Blond Restaurant with Castello di Borghese

Next Tuesday night at 8 p.m., Blond Restaurant and Bar in Miller Place, NY will be hosting A Fall Sensation Celebration with the wines of Castello di Borghese. The evening includes a six-course dinner prepared by Blond’s owner and executive chef, Samih Nelovic and entertainment by Walter Finley and accomplished acoustic singer/songwriter. The last and only time we were there we thought the food was good, but overpriced and the service was just okay. But, I hear that…
