Blue Point Blueberry Ale

Dan, one of this blog's most loyal readers, pointed out that all of my reviews up until this point have been big, hoppy beers.
He's right, so this week I decided to review Blue Point Brewing Company's Blueberry Ale. Fruit beers are not my all-time favorite style but I do enjoy certain fruit beers that are well made.
This particular fruit beer poured an amber color with a nice white foamy head. The nose is fruity with lots of blueberries and some light malt.
The first sip is more blueberry fruit along with a light amount of malt and almost no hops. The finish is short and light without much of an impact on the palate.
This beer has a very light body is almost more like a lager then an ale.
Overall, this beer is just okay, as there is nothing that really stands out to me at all. I have a feeling that this beer is made more for lambic or lighter beer fans, but there is a real lack of hop character.
The simple pairing here is a light romaine heart salad with fresh blueberries. A dessert pairing would match this beer with a sweet blueberry cobbler.

This beer does have a fan base down here. Usually with people who don’t really like beer if that makes any sense. It is not really my thing, but it has its place
BTW Kevin, I will be at Brewery Ommegang this Friday for a bachelor party. One of my favorite breweries.
Brewery Ommegang is my favorite New York brewery.
I know a ton of women who love this beer (Insert Beer stereotype here). With that being said, I had this beer once a while ago and remember it being halfway decent. During this tasting I had a bottle from the six pack and it was not very good. Thinking it may have been the bottle, I have since tasted 2 more bottles from the six pack and they were not very good. There is the possibility that the whole six pack was bad (given to me by a friend) or that my memory was way off.
I would also include Sixpoint Brewery and Brooklyn Brewery up there. But Hennepin is an all time favorite that I drink all year around with just about every food.
I do believe the draft version of the Blueberry is superior to the bottle version.
Ommegang is my #1, Brooklyn is my #2, and Captain Lawrence is #3.
Oh yeah I forgot about Captain Lawrence:)
And I also forgot about Southampton. Especially some of their 750 ml offerings…They are also up there.
They all have their own thing really. I can’t really rank them. I like Sixpoint for their very modern, very west coast in your face hoppy style. Ommegang is doing traditonal Belgian superbly but not much else, Brooklyn can brew every traditional style of beer with success but also be contemporary. I have never had a Captain lawrence brew that wasn’t extremely well made..Go NY beers:)

Sixpoint doesn’t bottle so lets save them for “brewpub” stats which is a whole nother animnal. The top 5 are prettly clear for me. 6-10 can changes places on any given day for me.
Bluepoint (Blueberry Ale) aside makes a few nice brews.
Blueberry beers are hard to pull off. The only one I’ve had that was worthwhile for me is the blueberry ale from the Atlantic Brewing Company in Mt. Desert Island, ME. Not sweet is the key.

Please one more post about that.I wonder how you got so good. This is really a fascinating blog, lots of stuff that I can get into. One thing I just want to say is that your Blog is so perfect
