Earlywine_frontOutside of Beaujolais Nouveau (and we all know how over-hyped and mediocre those wines are) there aren't many opportunities to taste wines only weeks after the grapes were harvested.

But every year Macari Vineyards' Early Wine is one such wine that I look forward to.

As the name implies, this 100% chardonnay wine is an extremely early release.  In fact, just about everything about this wine is early. It was harvested on September 9, bottled October 16 and then released October 23. Just over 1,700 cases were produced.

The 2008 edition pours extremely pale greenish yellow in the glass — so pale in fact that it’s nearly colorless — with a few tiny bubbles clinging to the glass. The nose is loaded with aromas of grapefruit, Granny Smith apple, lemon zest and subtle salty minerality.

It’s medium bodied and almost electric in its liveliness. Mouth-watering acidity tingles as it moves over your palate, bringing balance to the wine’s sweetness. The flavors are straightforward, mainly citrus with a little minerality. Call it refreshing. Call it thirst quenching. It's not complex, but there's something fun and satisfying about it.

Typically, I don’t recommend drinking whites well chilled, but in this case, you should. As it warms, the sweetness steps forward a bit too much for my tastes.

There’s one more “early” to this Early Wine: Drink it early. Do not put it in your cellar for a year or two. Buy it and drink it. By March or April, the acidity will really start to drop and the wine becomes a lot less interesting and food friendly.

sounds like a pretty cool concept. Are they trying to replicate the idea of Beaujolais Nouveau or they just tried this once and liked the outcome?
    cheers!
    John :)

Actually, in Austria (where one of their two winemakers is from) they make this type of wine, calling it Jungwein (young wine). I don’t think those wines ever make it to the U.S., but he wanted to replicate it here.

This is the 6th Vintage of the Macari Early Wine, with its first release being from the 2003 harvest. The Early Wine consistently sells out way too “early ” for its huge following. John, if you would like to try it for yourself, e-mail us at macari@peconic.net with your shipping address and we will get it out to you in Virginia.

Hey Len, I just tried the 2009 Macari Early Wine. I tasted it blind, and it was so much like a Sauvignon Blanc!
I think early wine is an interesting idea, especially if you have it New years’ Day!
