And the Winner Is…

It is with great pleasure that I announce and introduce the winning logo in the Wine Blogging Wednesday logo contest, designed and submitted by Chris over at Drink Some Wine. Congratulations to Chris and thanks to all of you who voted. I’m going to work with Chris to fine tune the logo…so hopefully we’ll have the “final” version soon. Now, keep an eye out for an annoucement for February’s vintage of Wine Blogging Wednesday…

Off to Vermont

This afternoon, Nena and I are heading to Killington, Vermont for a long weekend with friends. Of the six people going, only two ski (I’m not one of them) but we’re certain to have a great time in the winter wonderland. So, there probably won’t be much activity on LENNDEVOURS until Tuesday. But, you should definitely take my New York Wine Survey while I’m gone. Take it now.

New York Wine Country Coverage Survey

For those of us who love New York wines, it can be frustrating to find good, in-depth information about them — particularly if you live in the Finger Lakes and want Long Island information (or vice versa). Each region has it’s own publications that cover wine (some very little, some quite a bit) but all of the wine-focused publications are 100% ad supported (often filled with ads paid for by wineries). I had the idea recently to create an extension of LENNDEVOURS that will cover ALL of the wines and wine regions of New York and deliver them to you…

Ternhaven Cellars Garagiste Closing His Doors

Harold Watts, 73, Ternhaven Cellars’ founder, owner and winemaker, has sold his five-acre vineyard in Cutchogue to someone who is expected to build a house there and keep the acreage planted in vines. He’s keeping his property and winery in Greenport, but isn’t planning on making wine anymore. As I wrote last July, Harold is one of Long Island’s true garagistes. For more information (but not much) check out this piece in Newsday. (I like seeing that Mr. Harrington refers to Harold as a garagiste six months after I did). Stay tuned for an interview with Harold…I’m trying to track…

Should Long Island Be Identified By a Single Grape?

By Contributing Columnist Charles Massoud When Lenn asked if I would contribute to LENNDEVOURS, I was at the same time flattered, intrigued, apprehensive and I questioned if that is something I was good at. Of  course to write here must be sufficiently interesting for the reader, but I was thinking selfishly about whether it would be interesting for me. Writing in a newspaper is pretty much a one way street. In that case I state my opinion as forcefully as I can. So I do not do it often. Writing here offers a novel opportunity because it can be…

Learn the Wines of Germany and Eastern Europe

Apparently Dr. Vino and Beau aren’t the only bloggers getting in on the education act. The Obsessed one, Derrick of An Obsession With Food (and Wine) will be teaching a class on the wines of Germany and Eastern Europe this summer at UC Berkeley Extension’s Wine Studies Program. Anyone who has read his blog knows of his passion for these wines, so it’s sure to be a spectacular course. You can’t sign up just yet, but keep an eye out for more information this spring. And, keep your eyes peeled here on LENNDEVOURS for information about wine classes that I’ll…

Welcome Charles Massoud of Paumanok Vineyards to LENNDEVOURS

Please join me in welcoming Paumanok Vineyards’ co-owner and winemaker, Charles Massoud, to LENNDEVOURS as a contributing columnist. Charles was born and grew up in Lebanon. After finishing high school he went to study in Paris and upon graduation came to Philadelphia to continue his graduate studies. There he earned his MBA at the Wharton School and also met his wife Ursula who was also a student, at Chestnut Hill College. While wine was served at the dinner table at home he did not get too involved with it until he was sent by IBM on assignment to the state…

Lieb Family Celalrs — Recent Releases

Lieb Family Cellars, located on Route 48 in Mattituck, NY on Long Island’s North Fork has long been one of our favorite wine country destinations. The tasting room is small when compared with some of the opulent buildings and tasting rooms around, but the pouring staff (which sometimes includes Mrs. LENNDEVOURS) is super friendly and knows there stuff too. Lieb Family Cellars is the winery that brought us September’s Mission Merlot ($9.11), an affordable, gulpable red that donates 91 cents to charity for every bottle that is sold. They also make one of my favorite, lighter-style local merlots and the…

Wolffer Estate Wines Reviewed at Vinography.com

It was only a matter of time before Long Island wines made their way out to the West Coast and onto the world’s premier wine blog, Vinography. Okay, so maybe I pushed time a long a little bith with a few emails and phone calls, but regardless, Alder tasted through some of Wolffer Estate Vineyards’ current releases, and while he lost a couple bottles to cork taint, I think they showed pretty well. I was disappointed that his bottle of Estate Selection Chardonnay was corked…because I think it would have been right up his alley. But hey, it happens. See…
