Over the past few years, the portfolio at Peconic Bay Winery has undergone quite a transformation. From the addition of the second-label Nautique line to the creation of the winery's first flagship blend, Lowerre Family Reserve, to the East End's first grape brandy, to True Believer, a sparkling cider, the Peconic Bay team has been busy.
One of winemaker Greg Gove's newest creations is Peconic Bay Winery 2009 Lot #2 ($20) a blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon that delivers good value.
Complex for the price point, the nose offers sweet red cherry and red raspberry fruit with layers of earthy spice and sweet herbs over top.
Not overly intense or concentrated, the palate isn't as giving or complex as the nose, but shows similar berry and herb qualities along with some woodsy/stemmy character and a distinct red apple skin note.
The tannins aren't big, but are a bit drying and the acidity brings a bit of freshness. On the second day open, the flavors began to more closely match the nose in terms of depth and complexity, so you might want to decant this one, or tuck it into the cellar for some short-term aging.
