Brooklyn Oenology: A Sense of Place — and Community

Brooklyn Oenology (BOE) isn’t what you think of when you think of a winery. There you won’t find vineyards, a barrel room, tanks or even a cellar. But don’t be mistaken — it’s a serious winery, albeit in an urban setting. It’s a hybrid wine bar/retail store/art gallery with a hyper-focus on not just New York, but specifically Brooklyn. The environment is well-thought, masterfully curated and, above all, comfortable. Owner and winemaker Alie Shaper sources grapes from Long Island and the Finger Lakes and makes white, rose, orange and red wines at Premium Wine Group, a custom-crush facility on the…

Brooklyn Oenology Joines the Wine Blogosphere

Alie Shaper, proprietor of Brooklyn Oenology one of a couple wineries popping up in Brooklyn, sent me an email over the weekend letting me know that she's joined the wine blogosphere and is even posting some video to her blog. The one above is from the New York Wine Expo a few weeks ago.  By the way, Alie makes her wines out here in Mattituck at Premium Wine Group with fruit she buys from the North Fork. One of the coolest things about BOE is their wine labels, which feature artwork from Brooklyn artists and are printed as stickers that…

But, as we all think about how we can reduce our carbon footprints, drinking wines made closer to home makes perfect sense. Shipping wine across the country or around the world — in those heavy bottles — burns a lot of fossil fuel, emitting a whole lot of carbon dioxide. For Brooklynites, Alie Shaper owner of and winemaker for Brooklyn Oenology (BOE) is making it that much…

Brooklyn Oenology Debuts

By New York City Correspondent Sasha Smith This fall I went to the launch party for BOE, a winery housed in a converted warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. (BOE is short for Brooklyn Oenology.) Founded by engineer-turned-winemaker Alie Shaper, BOE released its first wines this fall, a 2005 Chardonnay and a 2005 Merlot. While the fruit comes from the North Fork and the wines are made in Mattituck at Premium Wine Group, the rest of this endeavor is thoroughly Brooklyn-based. Alie says that the winery was created “in the spirit of Brooklyn’s artisanal resurgence,” and points to the many artists and…
