Macari Vineyards 2011 Rose

Mostly a kitchen-sink saigniee, the Macari Vineyards 2011 Rose ($15) also has just over 10% steel-fermented chardonnay blended into it. Fruity aromas of watermelon, red cherry and peach dominate straightforward nose. Medium-light bodied, the fresh, lively palate brings similar, slightly candied, fruit flavors with a faint savory/herbal edge. A peppery note on the medium-short finish is unique. Producer: Macari Vineyards AVA: North Fork of Long Island ABV: 12.2% Price: $15*   (2.5 out of 5, Average-to-Very Good)

What We Drank: August 14, 2012

Evan Dawson: Huber Winery Sweet Marcella (Indiana) This wine was introduced to me as “the Red Cat of Indiana”. I wasn’t aware that Indiana made much wine, but of course, we know that just about every state is making wine these days. This particular wine is 100% Concord, $9 a bottle, nearly 7% sugar. A glance at the Huber website indicates that it’s certainly not Red Cat in terms of production; Huber makes just over 7,000 cases, perhaps a tenth or less of what Red Cat checks in at annually. Here’s the key question: Is it any good? Not…

Macari Vineyards 2009 Chardonnay

I seem to have built up a backlog of chardonnays that need to make their way to the NYCR tasting table. So, over the next couple of weeks, you can expect it to be a focus of reviews — along with some roses, some newly released summer whites and some other wines, of course. We’ll start the chardonnay parade with this Macari Vineyards 2009 Estate Chardonnay ($19) fermented in stainless steel, but showing some interesting lees characteristics on a nose dominated by juicy pear, pineapple and green tea. The nutty, slightly yeasty lees quality is  bit more pronounced on the dry, snappy,…

Macari Vineyards 2007 Reserve Merlot

Few expect a “jammy” component in Long Island wines, but the hot, dry 2007 vintage has led to a handful of wines with a decidedly jammy mid-palate. This wine, Macari Vineyards 2007 Reserve Merlot ($36) actually leans a bit in a different direction — away from sweet fruit and into the savory. With a nose that shows plum, cherry and raspberry qualities, an umami edge that is almost meaty is a welcome addition along with notes of dried herbs, clove, cinnamon and earth. Medium bodied and even restrained compared to many ‘reserve’ wines from the vintage, a bit of vanilla…

Macari Vineyards 2010 “Katherine’s Field” Sauvignon Blanc

By Lenn Thompson, Executive Editor Almost since its inception in 1995, Macari Vineyards, located in the North Fork town of Mattituck, has been a  top producers of Long Island sauvignon blanc. The 100% stainless steel “Katherine’s Field” bottling in particular — named for owner Joseph Macari Sr.’s wife Katherine — is a consistent and refreshing wine. That wine’s release is always one I look forward to every spring or early summer — but this year I was even more curious about it. It’s the first Macari sauvignon made by Kelly Urbanik, who joined the winery almost a year ago after…

Macari Vineyards 2008 “Katherine’s Field” Sauvignon Blanc

By Lenn Thompson, Editor and Publisher When it comes to Long Island sauvignon blanc, there is a small group of wineries that can be counted on to deliver consisten quality. Macari Vineyards is one of those wineries and puts out one of the region's best sauvignons. This is a wine that I look forward to every spring (when its released) and drink plenty of all summer long, even if I don't eat all of the great local shellfish that this wine is seemingly destined to be enjoyed with. Most of the grapes than went into Macari Vineyards 2008 "Katherine's Field"…

Macari Vineyards 2007 Estate Chardonnay

I've been a proponent of low- and no-oak chardonnay for quite some time now. Actually I wonder sometimes if it's that I'm for those wines or just strongly against over-oaked ones. It's probably a combination of both, really. One thing that I do have to admit though: chardonnay made without oak can be awfully boring on the nose. It's just not an overly aromatic grape and that's part of the reason it goes into oak so often… to bring some sort of aromatics to the wine. This 100% stainless steel chardonnay from Macari Vineyards, their 2007 Estate Chardonnay ($19) is…

Macari Vineyards 2008 “Early Wine” Chardonnay (North Fork of Long Island)

Outside of Beaujolais Nouveau (and we all know how over-hyped and mediocre those wines are) there aren't many opportunities to taste wines only weeks after the grapes were harvested. But every year Macari Vineyards' Early Wine is one such wine that I look forward to. As the name implies, this 100% chardonnay wine is an extremely early release.  In fact, just about everything about this wine is early. It was harvested on September 9, bottled October 16 and then released October 23. Just over 1,700 cases were produced. The 2008 edition pours extremely pale greenish yellow in the glass —…

March 1: LENNDEVOURS/canvas Magazine Wine Event

I’ve been toying around with the idea of hosting a Long Island wine event for some time. But now, through my affiliation with canvas Magazine, it’s becoming a reality. On Saturday, March 1 at 5 p.m., join me, three North Fork wineries, and Whole Foods Market at canvas’ Footprint Art Gallery in Huntington, NY for a local wine tasting with light food pairings. The three participating wineries are Raphael, Lieb Family Cellars and Macari Vineyards, and they’ll be pouring a variety of wines along side some food from Whole Foods. In addition to great wine and food, there will be…
