Corks of the Forks: A holiday gift guide for the wine lover

The following are some of the wine-related gifts I’d love to receive this year, but this list isn’t going to do me much good. My wife is done with her shopping. She has been for weeks, maybe months. She’s done buying for my family, her family, our kids and me. I, on the other hand, have barely started shopping for her, but that’s not relevant for a wine column. Besides, that’s what Amazon Prime is for. Wine. Every year I’m surprised at just how few people buy me wine. I’m a wine lover! Wine lovers, by definition, love wine. And…

Moustache Brewing Co. Ocelot 2.0 IPA

I recently visited the Moustache Brewing Co. during their ribbon-cutting ceremony and was able to taste through three of their current releases.  The One Drop Pale Ale, Everyman’s Porter and Ocelot 2.0 IPA were all impressive, but the IPA filled my growler and made the ride back home with me. The ale pours a bright orange-copper hue that just looks delicious. A bit too cold at first, the nose shows orange blossom, grapefruit rind and lemon. Once warmed, the aromatic hops are even more prevalent with a piney character taking over. A slight caramel note hints that the palate will…

Moustache Brewery to Host Grand Opening April 19

Over a year after my visit to Moustache Brewing Co. for the NYCR, Matt and Lauri Spitz are ready to open their doors to the public. It may seem like a long time to wait for beer, but alas, the tired and thirsty masses will be quenched this Saturday. After years of toiling with permits, renovations and working full-time jobs, the undertaking of the Spitzs is about to pay off. Tomorrow, April 19 from 1-6 p.m. , Moustache will be offering growlers, half growlers, pints, and short pours of their One Drop Pale Ale, Everyman’s Porter, and Milk & Honey Brown Ale. In…

Craft Beer On Long Island Grows Some Hair — Moustache Brewing Company

Is your Fu-Manchu feeling fuzzy? Is your goatee getting tingly? If so, that may be because Moustache Brewing Co. is riding its burly handlebar follicles straight into Riverhead this summer. Proprietors Matt and Lauri Spitz are dedicated to awesome facial hair and craft beer — and they are responsible for the new Long Island microbrewery soon to open in the heart of Polish Town. With the help of a highly successful kickstarter campaign launched in 2012, the couple has managed to raise over $30,000 with a list of investors from around the globe. “We were surprised to see people from…

Moustache Brewing Co.: Couple Kick-Starts Craft Brewing Dreams

As of 8 a.m. this morning, Lauri and Matt Spitz were $4,185  from — they hope — eventually quitting their day jobs to follow their hearts to craft brewing. The Central Islip couple hopes to launch Long Island’s newest craft brewery, Moustache Brewing Co., soon and they are using Kickstarter, a website that allows micro-investors to “fund and follow creativity” to raise the capital needed to get started. They have until midnight on May 23 to raise $25,000 via the website, or they don’t get anything. New breweries are popping up all over Long Island. It’s a fun time to…
