This morning, our friends from Forge Cellars — a label to know in the Finger Lakes — released an online video that is one part introduction and one part “this is why there is so much potential in the Finger Lakes.” It’s beautifully done and well worth the five-plus run time. You can also read the introductory piece that Evan Dawson write about Forge Cellars on NYCR.
On the heels of Riesling Rendezvous, a handful of Finger Lakes winemakers spent some time in the Willamette Valley. While there, they visited with Dan and Chas from Wine is Serious Business to shoot three videos about Finger Lakes riesling. The first one was published this week and it featured winemaker Kelby Russell from Red Newt Cellars. It’s a little longer than your average online wine video, but well worth the 20 minutes. Enjoy!
Youngstown farmer Tom Tower is no stranger to the spotlight in Western New York. He’s a driving force behind several local farmers’ markets and he’s been supplying some of the best chefs in the region with his fruits and vegetables long before it was hip to eat local. These days Tower has thrown his trademark hat into the grape growing ring by supplying winemaker Jonathan Oakes and the rest of the crew at Leonard Oakes Estate Winery with grapes grown on his farm just 1.5 miles south of Lake Ontario. I had the opportunity to do an on camera interview…
This video was taken at Eveningside Vineyards in Cambria, NY with owner Randy Biehl overseeing a small harvest of what looked to be ideal chardonnay grapes. These grapes will ultimately go into barrel and produce his Estate Reserve Chardonnay.
“Secrets of the Finger Lakes” aired original on September 12 at 8:30 p.m. on WHAM-TV and on 13wham.com For those of you who missed it — or want to watch it again — here it is broken into four clips. My television news superiors approached me about putting together a special report after the success of my book. At first I hesitated, because I didn’t want to simply air a rehashed set of stories that already appear in print. But then I saw an opportunity to tell new stories; these are some of the stories that do not appear in the…
This video, produced by Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, has been named a finalist in Wine Spectator’s 2012 Video Contest. We, of course, would love to see a winner from New York. Check it out and vote today.
The May 29 storms that hit the Finger Lakes brought a variety of rough weather elements, including hail. A few bursts of hail were large and destructive, and while most Finger Lakes wineries were not affected, Cayuga Ridge Winery is now confirming a loss of nearly 100%. [pullquote_right] It’s been an emotional time here. We work all season to ensure a healthy harvest, and in a short time it was all destroyed.” [/pullquote_right] “The hail hit us for about ten minutes on that Tuesday afternoon,” said Mary Jane Kircher, whose family owns and operates Cayuga Ridge. “There were pockets…
You may remember Juan Micieli-Martinez, winemaker at Martha Clara Vineyards, as the JuanMaker — a somewhat silly, penguin-loving winemaker who starred in a series of videos the winery produced a few years ago. While those videos were meant to educate viewers about some basic and sometimes not-so-basic parts of the wine production process, they were awfully goofy at times. With “Into the Bunghole” Juan is back, but with a bit more serious — though still approachable — tone. Sure, the name of the series itself keeps it from being too serious, but this first video offers great 101-type information on…
