What We Drank 2014.03.19

Todd Trzaskos, Contributing Editor: Macari Vineyards Early Chardonnay 2013 It being the New York Cork Report’s 10th anniversary I felt compelled to open something from the Empire Wine Cellars Club selections. This is the second time we’ve encountered this wine via the club, and I’m starting to think I need to buy direct. The flavors of this wine bring back youthful memories of summer bike rides to the local soda shop where we’d turn spare change into a treasure trove of penny candies. It’s intensely possessed by the spirit of sweet tarts…the green apple and lemon ones especially. Many might take…

Scarola Vineyards 2010 “Cappella” Chardonnay

scarola-2010-chardonnay

Apple and pear fruit aromas are slightly buttery, with gentle hints of citrus blossom beneath. Weighty and a bit hot on the finish, this chardonnay is fruity — apple, pear and pineapple — with a caramelly-toasty edge. Well balanced acidity matches the ripe, concentrated fruit, but that heat on the finish detracts. Producer: Scarola Vineyards AVA: North Fork of Long Island ABV: 13% Price: $18* (2.5 out of 5, Average-to-Very Good)

Scarola Vineyards 2005 Masseria Merlot

Members of the New York Cork Club will recognize this wine — it was part of our October shipment — but for some reason I never got around to publishing a review. That's a shame because this is a very interesting wine that combines value with all the characteristics that make Long Island merlot so unique and delicious. As I taste more and more 2005 reds, I'm finding them inconsistent. Some really show off the ripeness attained during the hot, dry growing season (before the deluge that is). Some don't. Many were bludgeoned with a lot of oak. Some weren't.…

Quick Q&A with Frank Scarola, Owner, Scarola Vineyards

For this week's holiday edition of the Q&A, we pose our questions to Frank Scarola of Scarola Vineyards, a still-new producer that definitely flies under the radar. The wines are made at Wolffer Estate under the watchful eye of Roman Roth, but the Scarola family has plans for a tasting room on the North Fork, hopefully soon. As with many new producers, they are playing the waiting game with the New York State Liquor Authority. In the meantime, the wines are available directly from the Scarola and at a few shops in the tri-state area. What (and where) was the…

New Websites for Three Long Island Wineries

Two Long Island wineries have new websites, and I just wanted to point them out. First is Scarola Vineyards, which is a producers you may or may not even know about. I did a piece that mentioned them for Hamptons.com and for Edible East End. The wines are made by owner Frank Scarola at Wolffer Estate under the watchful eye of Roman Roth. My favorite of Frank’s wines is his chardonnay. Waters Crest Winery has also (finally) revamped its website. I know that co-owner Jim Waters had quite a battle getting it completed (because some designers/developers didn’t do him right).…
