Winemaker Miguel Martin recommends lightly chilling his Palmer Vineyards 2012 Syrah ($20) and it’s easy to see why — it’s tastier that way. At normal drinking temperature, this light red (almost a rosado) — one that was made with 40% carbonic maceration — lacks a bit of structure with low tannins and not quite enough acidity to make up for it. But lightly chilled, the acidity is more apparent, framing peppery red fruit flavors accented by subtle violet character. Instead of grabbing headlines or a lot of attention, he simply works hard in the vineyard and cellar to not only produce impressives wines from the grapes you’d expect on the North Fork — grapes like cabernet franc, sauvignon blanc and pinot blanc — but also from those you might not expect, like New York’s first Albarino, which he introduced last spring. In Memorium: Bob Palmer, Owner, Palmer Vineyard

I just heard some more bad news for the Long Island wine community. Bob Palmer, owner of Palmer Vineyards and president of the Long Island Wine Council passed away last night in Huntington Hospital. I don't have any details yet, but will add them to this post as I learn about them. Another sad time for a wine community that is still mourning the loss of another prominent winery owner.

Palmer Vineyards 2007 Select Reserve White Table Wine

It's true what they say. Sometimes the sum really is greater than the parts. That is certainly the case with the latest release from Palmer Vineyards, a white blend that Spanish-born winemaker Miguel Martin has named "Select Reserve." Retailing for around $25, Palmer Vineyards' 2007 Select Reserve is a blend of 45% chardonnay, 35% pinot blanc, 18% sauvignon blanc and 2% Gewürztraminer. A little over a year ago, Miguel Martin joined Palmer Vineyards as its new winemaker bringing nearly 20 years of experience at wineries like Gonzalez Byass, Robert Mondavi, Yalumba and Catera. Obviously his coming to Long Island just in time for harvest means we won’t truly taste his impact until the 2007 vintage is released. Those will be the first wines that he nurtured in the fields as well as crafted in the cellar. Take Me Out to the Ball Game…With Wine?

It’s impressive to me how Long Island wines, on the whole, have improved over the past few years. Sure, there are still plenty of clunkers to be tasted, but it seems like the middle-of-the-road wines are better and the regions best wines are that much better lately. But good juice is only part of the package. To sell improving that wine, Long Island wineries need to market and promote themselves. Wine isn’t a "build it and they will come" sort of industry. Local producers do seem to be getting better at building relationships with their customers and attracting new ones.…
