March in canvas Magazine: Paul Dlugokencky, Blind Bat Brewery

mar2008_thumb

The March 2008 issue of canvas has been published, including my 250-word profile of Paul Dlugokencky, owner/brewer at Blind Bat Brewery in Centerport, NY. As you’ll see in the profile, Paul will be opening (once he gets his state license) what very well may be the smallest commercial brewery in the country. He’s calling it a nanobrewery because he will start making only one barrel per week. I was lucky enough to meet Paul and his wife, Regina, at the LENNDEVOURS/canvas drink local event Saturday night. We spent quite a bit of time talking about the joys of state licensing,…

canvas Magazine’s February Issue is Out

As many of you know, I run the website for canvas Magazine, a Huntington, N.Y.-based magazine that focuses on sustainable, "green" life on Long Island an beyond. One of my best friends, Matt O’Grady is one of the publishers, so I’ve been helping them out for a little over a year now. But this February issue, which just hit the streets, is one that I’m particularly proud of because the new editor, Diana Murphy, and have been working great together and this issue shows it. If you look at the cover of the magazine this month, you might recognize that…

Nice Stories on CSA and Greenwashing

lunch

I miss my CSA this year. I really do. With all of the crazy goings on this spring, what with an infant and all, we forgot to sign up either with Golden Earthworm or Garden of Eve. And I miss it. I miss getting that box filled with locally grown, organic produce. I miss pulling odd or different looking vegetables out of there and thinking to myself "What is this and what can I do with it?" Next year we’ll be back in one. Especially with Jackson eating more and more things every day. We’ll want him to have the…

Sang Lee Farms in canvas magazine

sanglee

In this month’s issue of canvas, Cindy Krezel turns her Tasting Notes column to one of my favorite North Fork farms, Sang Lee Farms. The story focuses mainly on greens, but take it from someone who has driven out there (at least 45 minutes each way) just for their heirloom tomatoes-this is a place you have to check out. They also grow delicious, multi-colored carrots that I’ve enjoyed in the past and make some excellent pre-made Asian pestos and sauces as well.

January Issue of canvas Magazine

The January issue of canvas magazine has hit news stands as well as the Internet. I think this issue is particularly interesting, with a great story on the power of herbs, a short piece on North Fork Table and Inn, and one about mini-vacations for Long Islanders. The more I get involved with this publication, the more I enjoy the people, the content and its goals. Check it out.

canvas Magazine Website Launched

You may or may not have noticed that my blogging has been a bit scant the last few weeks. I wish I could tell you that it was because I was too busy eating at the finest restaurants and drinking the world’s best wines to write much. That wasn’t the case, but the real reason is almost as exciting. You see, I’m the online editor of a new magazine, canvas, which hits news stands on Long Island today. And, I’m happy to report, the website has launched today as well. I’ve also contributed a column about sustainable viticulture on Long…

Read Local: New Long Island Magazine — canvas

canvas_prototype

Long Island has more than its share of publications — too many in fact (and this coming from a guy who writes or has written for several of them). So many of them are the same — too many advertisements and too few interesting stories. Long Island’s newest magazine, canvas, is a little different. For one, the production value is through the roof compared to so many of the ad-supported papers in these parts. Two, the editor isn’t some just-out-of-college rookie or crazy person without any real talent. canvas’ editor, Ramin Ganeshram is an experienced journalist, editor and cookbook author…
