Many in and around Long Island wine country are still without power (including me and my family) but reports are trickling in on the damage Hurricane Irene did as she passed over the area.

  • Roman Roman Roth, of Wolffer Estate, Roanoke Vineyards and Grape of Roth sent an email this morning saying "The storm is gone but the Grapes of Roth is still standing. Never mind that we are sitting in the dark! Grapes look fine. Little bruising on some unlucky berries  but no disaster…..the generator is keeping the beer cold! Let's hope we have 2 months of sunshine!"
  • At Lenz Winery, tasting room manager Jerol Rickard reports: "Lenz made it through Irene… We currently have no power at home in Riverhead or at the winery in Peconic. No structural damage to report."
  • Juan Micieli-Martinez, general manager and winemaker at Martha Clara Vineyards, sent an email saying that "I can report that on a vineyard level we faired quite well. Honestly, it is really even hard to tell that a Hurricane/Tropical Storm hit the East End. Let's just say that we feel extremely lucky that it was not any worse."
  • Down on the south shore at Channing Daughters Winery, general manager Allison Dubin said that "We are without power but thankfully the grapes look great and the buildings — our existing and the one under construction — were not damaged. We are grateful!"
