WBW #17: Borthwick Vineyard 2003 Pinot Noir

When The CorkDork suggested Kiwi Reds for this, the 17th edition of Wine Blogging Wednesday, I thought it was a great idea. Personally, I had only tried one New Zealand red, a pinot noir from Spy Valley. I enjoyed it, so I was happy for the excuse to explore more. Well, it was much more difficult to find a wine to post about than I thought. Isn’t NZ supposed to be a fairly "hot" region for wines beyond sauvignon blanc? After visiting a few mediocre shops that didn’t have any wines that fit the bill, I headed to one that…

Vote for the Wine Blogging Wednesday Logo

Don’t forget, today is Wine Blogging Wednesday, your opportunity to expand your wine knowledge and fun with wine lovers the world over. This month, we’re hosted by the Corkdork with Red Kiwi’s as the theme. (I’ll post about my wine tonight). A few months ago, I announced a little logo design contest for the event and the time has come to uncork the potential designs…and YOU GET TO VOTE FOR THE WINNER. I was going to put together a team of judges, but with only five entries, I thought it much more democratic to let "the people" speak and vote.…

WBW #16 Wrap Up Posted

The results for Wine Blogging Wednesday #16 — Judge a Wine By its Label have been posted over at An Obsession With Food (And Wine). Check them out. Our host, Derrick, did something quite interesting with the round up…broke them down by previous participation (or lack there of in the case of the "Fresh Faces"). Great idea and great job pulling together the ever-growing number of participants. Keep an eye out for the announcement of Wine Blogging Wednesday #17. I won’t spoil the surprise…but once again I won’t be drinking Long Island wine…because it won’t fit the theme. www.flickr.com Check…

WBW #16: The Lucky Country 2003 Barossa Valley

Did you remember to go out and get your "pretty label" wine? If not, shame on you for missing out on this month’s edition of Wine Blogging Wednesday, the globe’s premier wine blogging happening. This vintage of WBW, brought to us by Derrick of An Obsession With Food, challenged us to judge a book by it’s cover…or more accurately, buy a wine based soley on its label. We all know that a wine’s label tells us absolutely nothing about the quality of the wine on the inside, but this is a great theme nonetheless. You’ll be shocked to learn that…

Wine Blogging Wednesday #16 — Judge a Bottle by its Cover

Have you ever found yourself staring at a wall of wine at th wine shop, with no idea what you should by? Subconsciously or not, a wines label often jumps out at us all in that situation and affects our buying decision. I hate to admit it, but it’s happened to me to. (And the opposite is true, Nena and I often comment on the bad labels we see). Of course we know better — pretty labels often hide ugly wines — but we’re human and wineries put a lot of money and time into designing labels that will make…

WBW: Waters Crest Winery 2001 Meritage

Fatemah said 250 cases with bonus points for a producer under 1000 cases per year. I drink a lot of wines from small, local producers (but then, you already know that). But I wanted to fine the smallest production wine I could. I think I’ve accomplished just that. The numbers on Waters Crest Winery 2001 Meritage? 50 cases were made. 186 cases total winery production that year. That’s right…I think I showed Fatemah who’s boss *wink* So,  I had the wine and the dual WBW to drink it for. But what to eat along side? I didn’t take pictures (I…

WBWx2

WBWx2 is here. Today is Wine Blogging Wednesday, but you already know that. Fatemeh from Gastronomie is hosting the first WBW for today, forcing us to drink a wine of which 250 or fewer cases were made. But, today is also a WBW of another kind entirely — Wife’s Birthday Wednesday. Yup, today is Nena’s 28th birthday. So, we’ll be drinking our Wine Blogging Wednesday wine tonight with the dinner I’m cooking for my beloved birthday girl. The menu: It’s a surprise (for now)The wine: Waters Crest Winery 2001 Meritage Jim Waters only made 50 cases of this wine (his…
